The Brilliant Club & Scholars Programme
Christs College funds students to take part in the Brilliant Club, a National program designed to challenge and educate young people to aspire beyond school towards university and further education. Students from all backgrounds, particularly families where the young person is the first to go to university are encouraged to volunteer for eight after school hourly sessions where they are taught a specialist subject by a PHD student. Previous subjects have been wide ranging and have included Dwarf Galaxies and Dark Matter, Neurodiversity, Women in Literature and Lost in Translation: the Power of Language. The Brilliant Club program usually runs over the summer term and can take up to fourteen year 9 students each year on a first come first served basis.
Once students have completed their sessions and homework leading up to their final assignment, they are invited to a graduation ceremony at a National University. Students have graduated from Keeble College Oxford, from Royal Holloway, from Sussex and Reading Universities to date. During their visit they spend the day touring with Uni ambassadors, asking questions about Uni life, and participating in a graduation ceremony similar to that held for Uni graduates. Their qualification is held in similar regard to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award for employability and can help secure a University place in the future. Students are able to join an alumni group once they have graduated which gives them ongoing access to help and support.
